A floating shelf only looks simple. The hard part is what you cannot see: a steel rod bracket or a wood cleat fastened into the wall structure, with the shelf slid over it. In a wood-stud wall that means hitting the studs. Many homes around Sarasota and Bradenton have concrete block exterior walls with furring strips on the inside, so shelves on those walls need masonry anchors set into the block instead. Getting that right is what keeps a shelf level under a full load of books.
There are two main ways to build the shelf itself. A solid wood shelf, like white oak or walnut, is cut from thick stock and drilled to take the bracket rods. A box-built shelf is hollow inside, which gives a deeper, chunkier look without the weight and leaves room for a channel along the bottom. That is where an LED strip goes, set in an aluminum channel with a diffuser, so you see one even line of light and not a row of dots.
Mantels follow the same idea, plus one more rule. Above a fireplace, the unit's manual sets how far a wood mantel has to sit from the opening and how deep it can be, and the mantel gets built to that. A beam-style mantel in stained wood is a popular pick over a linear fireplace. For shelves, tell us the wall width, how many shelves you want, the wood, and what will sit on them. Mention whether it is an outside wall, since that changes the mounting.

It depends on the bracket, the shelf depth, and what the wall is made of. A deep shelf on a solid bracket anchored into studs or block holds books and decor well. A shallow shelf hung on drywall anchors alone does not. Tell us what will go on it, and the support gets sized to the load.
Yes, with the right driver and dimmer. LED strips run on a low-voltage driver kept in a cabinet or another reachable spot, and a compatible dimmer or remote sets the brightness. Warm white strips around 2700K to 3000K blend best with the rest of your home's lighting.
Close, yes. Stain gets tested on a sample of the actual shelf wood and checked against your floors or cabinets in your own light. An exact match across two different woods is rare, so sometimes a complementary tone looks better than a near miss. We will show you both before deciding.
