Wire shelving is the standard in a lot of new homes, and it wastes space. A custom closet starts with an inventory instead: how much long hanging for dresses and coats, how much double hanging for shirts and pants, how many pairs of shoes, and what belongs in drawers. From there each wall gets a plan, with rods set at heights that fit you and shelves sized for what will actually sit on them. Nothing is a guess once the count is done.
Closets get built from a few materials. Melamine panels are tough and easy to wipe clean. Painted MDF or plywood gives a furniture look, with trim and crown at the top. Wood or wood-faced shelves and drawer fronts add warmth in a walk-in. Adjustable shelf pins let the layout change as your things do. An island with drawers, a full-length mirror, a bench, or LED strips along the shelves and rods can all be part of the plan when the room is big enough.
Florida closets have one extra problem: humidity. A closet on an outside wall with the door shut can end up with stale air and musty clothes. Leaving gaps behind the shelves, using vented doors where it makes sense, and making sure the AC reaches the space all help the air move. For an estimate around Sarasota, measure each wall of the closet, note the ceiling height, and send photos of it as it is now. Pantries and other storage spaces get planned the same way.

Measure each wall from corner to corner, the ceiling height, and where the door, window, light switch, and any attic hatch sit. Then count roughly how much of your clothing hangs long, hangs short, and gets folded. That count shapes the layout more than the size of the room does.
Yes. Trading one rod and one shelf for double hanging on one side, shelves or drawers on the other, and a shelf up high adds a lot of usable space to the same footprint. Planning the layout around the door opening also makes the far corners easier to reach.
Airflow. Shelves stop short of the back wall so air can move behind them, solid backs get skipped where they are not needed, and vented or louvered doors help on closets that stay shut. Keeping the AC reaching the closet matters most in a Florida summer.
