Bradenton is the Manatee County seat, and its downtown sits right on the Manatee River, which forms the city's northern border. By Florida standards it is an established town: incorporated in 1903, it merged with the neighboring town of Manatee in 1943. West of downtown, the Riverview district holds dozens of large houses from the 1920s, the kind of homes where a new bookcase, mantel or fireplace surround has to respect the original trim, ceiling height and proportions instead of announcing itself as new.
The bungalow neighborhoods are a big part of the city's character. The Braden Castle Park Historic District, bounded in part by the Manatee and Braden rivers, joined the National Register in 1983 and holds 192 historic buildings, many of them Craftsman-style bungalows built between 1924 and 1929 for winter visitors. Just south of downtown, the Village of the Arts covers 36 acres with more than 200 homes alongside galleries and studios, some of its buildings close to a century old. Bungalow rooms tend to be compact, which is where a window seat with storage or a wall of built-in shelving earns its keep.
Housing here did not stop in the 1920s, either. In the River District, homes range from early-1900s construction to brand-new structures, and many have been remodeled or torn down and rebuilt. Along Riverview Boulevard, most homes date from the 1950s and 1960s, and many have been extensively renovated since. A house that has been updated in stages can end up with rooms from different decades side by side. A consistent run of cabinetry, a new fireplace wall or matching molding is one of the cleanest ways to make it read as one design again.
